FUNDING SOURCES & EXTENDED HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT.

Many extended health plans cover Psychology services (including Counselling and/or Assessment) on a reimbursement basis. Psychologists can direct bill for counselling services through Pacific Blue Cross and insurance providers that use Telus e-claims.. If you are planning to submit to a benefit plan, check with your insurance first as each plan has different allowances and requirements of the provider. You will be provided with a receipt to submit to your insurance provider.

You may also be funded for counselling services through a third party. Some examples of common funding sources include ICBC, Long-Term Disability Companies, Metis Nation BC, FNHA, Jordan’s Principle, Variety Club, AFU, and CVAP

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND RISKS OF PSYCHOLOGY SERVICES AND COUNSELLING?

BENEFITS: Psychology services and counselling can help you feel better, supported and understood. Our services can also help you identify your values, embrace your strengths and your weaknesses, celebrate your abilities, and work towards your goals. We will work with you to understand and take control of your problems by teaching you new skills to change how you feel, think, act, cope, and interact.

RISKS: Although we work hard to provide a safe environment for you to express yourself, sometimes psychology and counselling can invoke difficult emotions that are hard to experience, such as fear, sadness and anger. There is no guarantee that counselling will work or create change in the way you may hope. Sometimes other people in your life will not support changes you may make and as a result some relationships may change, or you may feel differently about these relationships. You also may not get the results you hoped for or expected in an assessment.

WHAT ARE YOUR RIGHTS WITH OUR SERVICES?

At the beginning, we will discuss your goals and suggest a plan of service. This is a reciprocal process and your input is essential for treatment to be successful. Our services are voluntary and you can withdraw your consent at any time. Also, you have the right to refuse to participate in certain therapy modalities or assessments even if we recommend such (i.e. family therapy). Periodically, we will make suggestions for other support services available in the community. It is your choice if you want to access these services.

HOW DO YOU STORE MY PERSONAL INFORMATION?

As per The Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) we keep written records for your contact information, the reason you are seeking counselling and notes on our sessions. This information is stored on a secure software management system that is compliant with PIPA protocol. You have the right to request to view these notes and have a copy.

WHAT INFORMATION IS CONFIDENTIAL?

We will keep everything we talk about confidential (we will not share any information with anyone else without your written permission). However, there are some situations that require us to break your confidentiality without your consent. These exceptions include, but are not limited to:

  • If there is an imminent risk of you harming yourself or someone else;

  • If you tell your clinician or suspect someone is hurting a child under the age of 18 physically, sexually, or emotionally;

  • If your clinician is legally obligated to do so (court-ordered); and

  • A request through the PIPA legislation for information about you (i.e. a parent if you are a minor); or

  • A request by the CHCPBC if you have filed a complaint (for psychologists only).

  • At times we participate in peer consultation or access supervision regarding specific cases. If this were to happen, all identifying information would be removed, and the logistics of the clinicians process will be discussed.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A COUNSELLING SESSION?

Often Counselling begins with a back-and-forth conversation. While you tell me your story - your current struggles, doubts and concerns -  I ask questions that will guide the conversation into different directions, and take us more deeply into your current process. Using a client-centered focused, I may gently challenge various thought patterns, listen for themes, and encourage you to explore your experiences on a deeper level. I help you come up with more effective ways to deal with current difficulties in your life.

WHAT IS MY STYLE AS A THERAPIST?

I come from a strength-based client-centered approach. I am passionate about helping people and I work to understand my clients using empathy and understanding. Although I strive to be non-judgmental, at times I gently challenge my clients in an attempt to encourage them to look at their difficulties on a deeper level.

HOW LONG WILL I NEED IN COUNSELLING?

That depends on the person, your history, and the concerns that brought you to counselling in the first place. Sometimes a client only needs a session or two to sort out a current issue or concern. While other clients require months of counselling to unpack complex trauma. There is no set number, and we will discuss the estimated length of treatment during our first session.
